About Us

Bal Vihar, meaning “garden of children”, is a home dedicated to providing a stable and loving family atmosphere to abandoned, neglected and orphaned children. It is run by the Sadhu Sunder Singh Welfare Society which has been consistently working to implement its objectives, walking on the path of serving humanity with selfless devotion. Since its establishment, all activities of the Society are maintained solely by public support.

Bal Vihar is licensed by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of N.C.T. of Delh . Abandoned, neglected and orphaned children are rescued and brought to Bal Vihar by police, Childline centers, other NGOs and social workers, relatives or neighbors of children in distress, and our members. We presently don’t have a license for providing adoptions. Individuals can sponsor a child for his/her entire education, healthcare, and other needs and they are encouraged to interact, meet, and plan for him/her, but the child must remain at Bal Vihar.

As of today, 100 children between the ages of four months and 20 years are accommodated irrespective of cast, creed or religion at Bal Vihar. The home accepts both boys and girls; they are segregated in two separate buildings at bedtime. The orphanage serves helpless children without any discrimination, and thus represents the composite culture of Indian society, with its full diversity of religions, castes and creeds.

We have strong support from staff and volunteers who provide assistance in running the orphanage. Two caretakers, three destitute ladies serving as housemothers and one helper also reside at the orphanage. The housemothers are also from broken families and have left their families to work for the care and protection of their children as well as for their own security.

The orphanage focuses on an all-round upbringing and the children are provided nutritious meals three times per day, quality healthcare, clothing, education and emotional development.

With generous contributions from neighbors and well-wishers within the country and abroad since 1995, the Society today owns two shelter homes with a total built up space of approximately 300 yards for girls and small boys in Mahavir Enclave, Palam, and another 110 sq for elder boys at New Vision Colony, Najafgarth, to house all the children. The home has ventilated living rooms with air coolers, adequate toilets and bathrooms, hygienic kitchen and dining hall.

Daily life at the orphanage follows a routine. The elder children are encouraged to help the younger ones by washing their clothes, helping them to bathe, brush their teeth and get ready for school, among other things.

The children are also provided with entertainment and educational information through newspapers, DVDs and CDs. The Society organizes outdoor picnics for children to different places with the help of people in the community. Educational trips to museums, historical places, a zoo, and other educationally enriching places are organized to enhance their general knowledge. We are also planning to arrange multimedia based academic material to improve their learning capabilities. For recreation, indoor games for all ages are made available to the children. They are also provided with outdoor game equipment including a badminton, cricket kit, etc. The children are escorted by a caretaker to a nearby playground to play games like cricket, football, etc.

Bal Vihar celebrates all National Festivals by organizing patriotic & cultural performances by the children. We also celebrate festivals including Lohri, Holi, Deepawali, Eid, Gurupurv, Raksha Bandhan, and Christmas, relating to all religions, as well as the Raising Day of Bal Vihar, Sadhu Sunder Singh’s birth anniversary, Baba John Dayal’s birth anniversary, Children’s birthdays and New Year celebrations with great pomp and show. All the children are educated about the significance and historical importance of each religion.

The Society has the privilege to solemnize girls attaining marriageable age to tie the nuptial knot by their wish, thereby settling them to live in a family of their own. About eight marriages have been made at Bal Vihar since its beginning, including the marriages of one Hindu girl and one Muslim girl last year as per their religion. The Society continues to interact with the girls and their families after their marriages to stay informed about their well-being.

We have been able to maintainin and improve the living conditions and overall personality of hte children by inviting public support. As a result, a strong group of volunteers is now associated with Bal Vihar to help in education, healthcare, celebration of festivals, organization of functions, day-to-day activities, and providing affectionate care to all the children.

The Society also extends help to other homes for handicapped, blinds, orphans, victims of AIDS, Leprosy and natural disasters by donating extra cloths, bed sheets, blankets, etc., received from the public for Bal Vihar.

The Society maintains all updated documents and records including attendance registries for the children, staff and visitors, a menu registry, etc.

Human touch and service of humanity is universally applauded. Based on these noble principles, great works are being undertaken worldwide. We on our part are doing our bit by running our “BAL VIHAR” ~ Home for Less Privileged Children.

We are very thankful to all our donors, sponsors and benefactors for extending valuable help to Bal Vihar. In particular, we would like to express our gratitude to all the persons visiting the orphanage and taking care of our children.
